Orlando Background:

In 1856, Orlando becomes the seat of Orange County (formerly known as
Mosquito county in 1843). Shortly after the new South Florida Railroad boosts the fledgling agricultural markets. For the next century, agricultural crops - primarily citrus - provides the livelihood for the area
punctuated with periodic setbacks of freezing temperatures and foraging
insects.

In 1964 Walt Disney purchases more than 28,000 acres of farmland in the area. In 1965 he announces his intention to build a magnificent theme
park - just one year before his death from lung cancer. His dream is realized in 1971 when the Magic Kingdom officially opened its doors.

In 1982, Disney introduces Epcot followed in 1989 by Disney-MGM Studios,
Typhoon Lagoon, and Pleasure Island.

By 1990, Universal Studios gets into the theme park act, followed in 1993 by
SeaWorld.

Disney begins its own cruise line in 1998 and opens Animal Kingdom. In the same year, Universal enters the competition with CityWalk. Meanwhile,
Downtown Disney merges Pleasure Island and Disney Village Marketplace. Here
Cirque du Soleil debuts.

In 1999, Universal opens a second theme park "Islands of Adventure" and
Disney launches it's second Cruise ship, the Wonder.

By 2000, Seaworld expands with Discovery Cove and Universal cashes in with the Hard Rock Hotel.

Two years later Disney opens two more resorts: Animal Kingdom Lodge and the Villas at Wilderness Lodge, however, closes Church Street Station due to the economy of 2002 and the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and Washington, D.C.

Prior to Orlando and it's thrills, there was and still is Cypress Gardens -
a ski park with lush gardens. Also bringing in crowds is Fantasy of
Flight - the history of aviation with a flight simulator. Winter Garden is
an upscale area for those with more refined tastes offering fine dining,
shops, and museums with lovely views of area lakes.
